Reducing Lead Time with CNC Equipment Brings Quality Bonus

Fordsell Machine Products has reduced lead time on certain parts using its new CNC turning centers. The machines' advanced controls include features that reduce the upfront programming requirements and simplify tooling requirements. Furthermore, thanks to the flexibility of the machines themselves, we have also been able to eliminate secondary operations in some cases, thus slashing time in process and overall project turnaround.

On one particular part we used to have four separate operations, three screw machine operations plus cross drilling. We have now reduced it to one operation with more consistent quality, less time in the shop and much quicker responsiveness for our customer. Using the old process, we planned on starting this part in our plant eight weeks prior to its due date; now we start it two to three weeks before we deliver it.

On another part, three operations were reduced to one. One of the secondary operations we eliminated involved a recurring quality problem which was completely eliminated in the new process. Lead time was cut in half on this part.

A corollary benefit is the reduction in time needed for inspection and washing parts after each operation. This reduced our queue time internally and has reduced the load on the inspectors.
